    If he knew his son kept guns that is a measure of negligence right there.
    Warren's son was an adult, and it's overwhelmingly likely that he bought his guns legally. Unless he'd been involuntarily hospitalized for mental illness, there was absolutely no lawful way to take his guns away. Taking them without his consent would have been a crime - a felony, most likely.

      Adult or not, if my child had a history of chronic depression, I would consider it negligence as a parent to not have a caring discussion with them about whether their having immediate access to a gun was a prudent choice.

      Perhaps Rick Warren had such a discussion with his son, perhaps not,  but why would there be a problem for him to cut an ad encouraging others to do so?
