  •  Threats must be realistic. (10+ / 0-)

We throw around "primary them" here, but to be effective, it can only be a few.  Like with Lamont lieberman.  So while I have no problem with threatening primaries, and even doing them where possible, witholding votes and money EVEN IN THE GENERAL ELECTION, if supported by sufficient people, is actually a more effective threat.  But by all means, talk to CVongress folsk and threaten primaries also.  Can't hurt.

what the hell are we afraid of? Call, write, yell at them like there's no tomorrow: "We will crrrrrush you if you go along with this!"

So what if we don't really mean it (I think most of us do though) or if we can't quite pull it off. Meh. They need to know we at least want to. Little peon worms that we are, we can still say Ouch! when they step on us.

        Like I said,

But by all means, talk to Congress folsk and threaten primaries also.  Can't hurt.
2.3 million signed a petition to Obama.  That has an impact.  If people could figure out their congressional district and sentaors, it might be worth informing the Congress folks.

          I'm not saying it hurt.

          But it didn't help.

We did not win that battle, and we may not win this, but it is worth trying.  Different people have different ways of fighting.

I think it's worth trying.  Right now, Republicans prevent any deal (becasue they want far more and because they don't want Obama to "get" a Grand Bargain).

And millions of people in the streets for years did not end the Vietnam War until Nixon did a deal.  50,000 Americans died  for a "deal" that was likely available in 68.

The Iraq invasion was not stopped by millions in the streets.

The "left" fails a lot, but it's still worth trying.

            •  You're acting like they don't know what you (6+ / 0-)

              think.

They spend 10's of millions a year on polls to find out what you think.  They know.

Showing up to a token protest until the permit expires isn't resistance.  It's never changed anything, and it never will.

But that's pretty clearly not what I'm talking about.

                •  A spontaneous walkout by half a million kids (0+ / 0-)

was enough to destroy Bush's planned "immigration reform", which he intended to be one of his major legacy achievements.

                  •  Who walks out and how to you (0+ / 0-)

get to that?  A general strike?

I was 14 for Moratorium Days in 1969 and skipped my 9th grade.   Webnt to a near-by college and joined in my first anti-war demonstration.  Of course, that was a war and it took a lot of organization.

I thought Republcians destroyed Bush's immigration refrom.  I thought Latinos wanted it.  I remeber the walkouts, but I thought they were pro-refrom.  Maybe I misremember.

      •  Writing and calling won't stop this shit. (6+ / 0-)

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it hurts anything.  At least so long as people don't do it and then brush their hands and say they've done their bit.

We get in the street or we lose.  Even if we get in the street we probably lose.

I don't know why Americans have such an abiding belief that our country is somehow entirely different from the whole rest of the Western World.

        •  We have to be willing to make them lose (8+ / 0-)

They don't care if we're in the streets.  They do care if we're at the polls.

And I don't think there's anything wrong with voting your pocketbook.  Instead of delivering for me, you caused me to lose money every month for the rest of my life and I don't reward you for that.

They have stopped delivering for the middle class.  They pay lip service to the social wedge issues du jour at least until the polls change, but they've stopped delivering the goods.

Politics is about getting your side to deliver.  When they don't, they should feel the pain they caused you.

          •  Do they really care all that much (2+ / 0-)

            if you're at the polls?

Most of them make more money after they lose their seats, so long as they do what the Money Power wants while they're in them.
