  •  I have cooked using washed-out coffee cans (0+ / 0-)

at camp (and for awhile once when the gas line in a rental developed a leak that made me scared to turn it on. The landlord was out of town; the good news is, this was a Texas summer. A cold shower at the end of the walk home from work -- about three miles -- felt really good. I got a friend to give me a lift to the local bakery and bought a couple of their cherry-pie-filling buckets -- about 3 gal. each -- in which to heat water on the barbecue grill for washing, dishes, etc.). Those things are really nice; I don't know if you can get them any more, though. Big buckets with sturdy bails and tap-down lids!

I am a little wary of pop cans and so on because of the liners, but I think a coffee can would be okay, and from what I've seen some of the plain cans (or enamel-lined steel cans, like Herdez salsa comes in) are okay.
