There was a Kastljós episode recently about a girl who was raped in Húsavík (Iceland) who had the same sort of thing happen as in Steubenville, with everyone siding with the rapist and bullying the victim (the rapist was convicted for it and the conviction only strengthened at the Supreme Court appeal).  People stopped greeting her on the street, she got random angry calls, a girl told the guy she was dancing with at a dance "Be careful, she might rape you!", the town newspaper ran an article supporting the rapist, etc.

    The problem is everywhere.

Including, dare I say, here at Daily Kos whenever the topic of Julian Assange comes up.  People defend "their own", and anyone who says that one of "their own" raped them, why that person is a lying slut trying to set up an innocent man, no matter what the judicial system says, and hey, what they're charged with is really nothing anyway...

    •  I'm not quite sure what Assange has to do with it. (0+ / 0-)

which the Svea court of appeal and Supreme court found (with a full hearing, with testimony from Assange's attorney) probable cause that he did in fact do it, and the British judicial system - lower court, high court, and supreme court - found no problems with the Swedish process.  But Daily Kos is full of people cheering on his run from the law and insisting that it's just a big conspiracy and the women are lying sluts trying to set up an innocent man.

        It's our Steubenville.
