    helpful. Thermo- is temperature and -haline refers to salt. Both heat and salt determine the density of seawater, and the density of water is a key driver of global circulation of the ocean. It's basic physics. Mass determines acceleration. That's my understanding, anyway. Again, Wikipedia is very helpful.
