When a D invokes a block its good because it's principled. When done by someone else it's un-democratic.

    •  When it's done repeatedly, it becomes (9+ / 0-)

obstruction...I don't think we've ever been that bad.

      •  Of course not (1+ / 0-)

... they have blocked Senate action with the same tools we criticize now.

That doesn't mean the rules shouldn't be changed now, given the undeniable misuse of them. And some should never have been allowed - "secret holds" for example - no matter who uses them.

The Senate is filled with arcane, obstructive procedural tools, thanks in large measure to one Harry F. Byrd (D-WVa), who was a master manipulator of them. McConnell is now somewhat in that position, though he uses them as a bludgeon, and he does it very well.

E.g. Bolluxing up firearms law enforcement by making the director subject to Senate confirmation and refusing to confirm anyone.  Ditto with the Federal Election Commission and stalling on the NLRB appointees. And the Warren and Cordray nominations to the Financial Protection Agency because the GOP wants to rewrite the law first. And close to a hundred judgeships. (We did the same on some Bush nominees. And it was, after all, the Bork defeat that energized Republicans to use these tools to a fare-thee-well.)

Our hands are not clean, but they're a lot cleaner than McConnell's.

2014 IS COMING. Build up the Senate. Win back the House : 17 seats. Plus!
