    People hadn't become complacent. They still believed that they could change things (and thus they did). They didn't leave all decisions about their lives in the hands of elites. Modern unions divert the time and energy of the rank and file to the process of electing leaders in union organizations to bargain on their behalf. The act of labor strikes was once more spontaneous, decided by the rank and file. Now the leaders determine such actions, and usually make deals before things get that far. And this approach is weaker. It steals the energy of the workers, and diffuses direct action.

    We need to get back to direct action. It worked.
