    So Obama isn't running for re election.  I guess any democrat who is running in 2014 would basically HAVE to oppose these cuts, right?  Especially since Republicans are doing so.  

    Then you have a mid term in which no one is talking about major changes to social security or medicare anymore.  Obama can ditch the issue rather quickly, and then all of a sudden, maybe SS and medicare are a little safer now that Republicans have spent energy on fighting against this kind of "entitlement reform?"  

    It sounds risky and far fetched in a certain way, but I don't know.... i think its hard to argue with the fact that this move, whatever it was intended to be, will result in protecting social security benefits for another few years at least.  Right?

      the most powerful Democrat in office. That kind of thing tends to get him and his policies hung around the necks of other Democrats running for office, regardless of whether those other Dems voted for those policies or not.
