  •  selling for "the children," 4 year olds that won't (6+ / 0-)

be looking for jobs for years and just may create jobs, low paying type jobs for nursery school aides?

President Obama just released a budget for next year that will reduce the deficit while investing in the things we need to keep our economy competitive for the long-term – like pre-K for four-year olds.
That just boggles my mind - how do they come up with this crap.

    •  The preschool program (6+ / 0-)

is also paid for with a sin tax, tobacco tax.

It's a bad way to fund a program that you want to be long lasting.

The ideal thing to do with a tobacco tax is to use the proceeds to fund a health program.  The sin tax causes a reduction in use of tobacco (there is a technical term for this but I forget it at the moment) so the reduction in usage, resulting in a reduction in the health mitigation funding -- all of this makes sense.

If you use a sin tax for preschool funding, as the tobacco usage declines, the revenue declines, and then how do you fund your preschool program?

very regressive nature of the funding (sales taxes).

This is a tax that will mainly hit lower income Americans.

Saw the Press Conference.  The Administration officials had no good answer for how the funding would be maintained, if indeed it helped cut back on the number of smokers in the future.
