    Thanks.

I think his endgame is nothing less than significantly diminishing the power of the GOP, long term, if not the dissolution of the party entirely.

This is jpartly achieved through the shorter term goal of significant gains for Democrats in the house in the '14 elections.

A key part of acheiving those gains is making sure our party is motivated to turn out, but also making gains in areas of the country where historically Dems do not perform as well.

By Obama in a sense owning the concept of SS cuts, he essentially boxes the GOP out of the debate, which is good, because they are unreasonable and incapable of honest debate.

Obama now has control over the debate and that can mean it will be meaningful and educational.

I think he will USE this opportunity to educate the public about SS.  If used properly, the debate could SPUR turnout and motivation in our base as they get riled up to protect SS.

I also think it can be a wedge issue for local Dems in redder areas to reach voters who are anti-Obama. If the local Dem can use SS as an issue to OPPOSE Obama, he has a better chance of reaching voters who are anti-Obama.

Obama has a history of seizing issues and using them as teaching opportunites.  See his "evolution" on gay marriage. He took one side, the public had a debate, minds changed, and Obama "evolved" and there's been significant progress.

The same model could be applied to SS.  Obama takes a side, the public debates right up until 2014.  Local Dem candidates lead a populist charge to protect SS and hopefully make significant gains in the house.

And yes, there's risk involved, there's risk to ANY political strategy. And maybe I'm wrong and in fact Obama IS stupid and naive and evil. I dunno. But I think my theory is just as plausible as the theory that he's an idiot.  Why is the theory that he's stupid or evil any more valid than the theory that he's engaged in a longer term strategy?

So Obama is looking to fuck granny over in order to use the moment as a teaching opportunity?

I'm curious as to how exactly Obama is looking to diminish the power of the GOP aid in their dissolution?  Wouldn't that have been more effectively done by laying down solid progressive policies which offer a clear distinction between the Dem ideals and making the GOP own their crap policies?  Like maybe instead of cutting SS and further means testing Medicare how about taking the Sen Begich plan on SS and pushing to negotiate prescription drugs and expanding Medicare?  That way Obama and the Dems could campaign together on how the GOP wants to replace Medicare with a fucking 20% off Coupon and privatize SS while the Dems are looking to make Medicare and SS stronger.  The approach he took actually gives the GOP cover and makes it harder for the Dems to campaign in 2014 UNLESS they run away from Obama.

You NEVER want to be in a position where the standard bearer of your party or their policies have become so toxic that you have to run away from them.  Basically Obama will be persona non grata in 2014 and that's in DEMOCRATIC LEANING DISTRICTS.  He can't help campaign or fund raise for Dems in 2014 because of this.    He's motivated the people alright, but as in 2010 we may find that the motivation is to punish all those who stand with Obama or have a D after their name.

This budget was a colossal blunder on so many levels.

    •  If he hadn't proposed a budget, he'd be trashed (8+ / 0-)

for that, and if he had proposed a budget that didn't "touch the third rail" he would have been attacked for not being serious and the gop would have been able to continue their mythological "seriousness" without actually offering anything.
I think time will tell whether this strategy works, but I'm generally in agreement with you.

You can't make this stuff up.
