Hospitals are, to some extent, prisons.  They consider patients to be "in their custody".   If you attempt to take your child out of the hospital when they don't agree to it, they can, in some situations, prevent you from taking your child or even arrest you.  One Mexican family recently had to sneak their child out and run for the border.   If they decide a patient it too sick, they won't allow the patient to leave.  If someone else attempts to take the patient from the hospital, they will charge that person with "kidnapping".

There are some valid reasons for this attitude.  However, there are also dangers that they will trample on the rights of patients and their families, WITH THE FULL COOPERATION OF POLICE, as happened in this situation.

In this situation, the patient was taken to the hospital without his consent.   But, when you have a choice, consider IF, and WHERE to be admitted.   Because, it might be harder to leave than you thought it would be.
