  •  don't fly huh? (6+ / 0-)

well, this one did pretty much, then chose to leg it.

but I think I have seen videos of them flying as well.

and wandering the halls du Utoob I found a Polish slide show of White Tailed Eagles, looking a lot like Golden Eagles, but...not.

or maybe both, one of these has a golden bill, the other not, one has white tail, the other, not. hmmm..maybe a juvenile, but the species overlaps.
Their relationship sounds like the NA sea eagle, aka, the Bald Eagle, a distant 28 mya cousin, in that the Golden hunts more on land and the WT on sea, yet Irish Kerry shepherds have been poisoning and shooting them, causing reintroduction efforts there to stall. The species was seriously depleted until reintroduction efforts got underway.

the wiki is great, lots about all of them, including balds and sea eagles.

    but this:

The single confirmed case of an eagle flying with a human being involved the White-tailed Eagle. One June 5, 1932, Svanhild Hansen, a 4-year-old girl, was playing next to her parent's farm house in Norway when a White-tailed Eagle grabbed her by the back of her dress and flew with her to its eyrie. The eyrie was 800 m (2,600 ft) up the side of the nearby mountain and about 1.6 km (0.99 mi) away in flying distance. The eagle dropped the young girl onto a narrow ledge about 15.2 m (50 ft) below the nest. After being discovered by a quickly formed search party, the little girl survived with no major injuries, ultimately having kept her talon-pierced dress throughout her life.[5]
and reading the wiki, it mentions the deer being carried by Bald Eagles.
Cultural memory at least, remembers the extinct sea eagle that used to prey on New Zealand natives.

And another nest cam, White Tailed Eagles and eaglet in Poland...windy there! I'm seasick!..oops, now it's a youtube of fledglings goofing around, big big fledglings. earlier was a live picture of a baby looking out of the top of the nest, just his head, as the nest tree swayed violently, and there was snow on it..or maybe it wasn't snow, haha. It's dark there, so..

    This machine kills Fascists.

    •  Apparently WILD turkeys fly but not (3+ / 0-)

domesticated ones. Or descendants of same. I guess that was bred out of them, or maybe they are heavier than wild ones. That's a neat video. I wonder what happened after the video ended tho, since the eagle was still after it.

When they're flying, eagles can grab pretty big stuff. Not that little kid in the park tho, the video that went viral not long ago. There have been a lot of analyses of what eagles can and can't do since that trick video was debunked.

Eagles are glorious. We have a lot of Balds here, see them pretty much every day, but it is never hohum. I always stop to watch them (if I'm not driving).
