    It suggests a personal choice. Perhaps something like 'gender attraction or affiliation' would be more accurate.

      is surely deliberate.  I have a born-again "Christian" Fox News loving sibling who talks about another sibling's "gay lifestyle choices".  (The lifestyle choices he speaks of are having a good job, owning a beautiful home, and being a good and decent person for heaven's sake.  In addition to being a friend of Dorothy....)  It is mean to imply that there is choice in the matter.  As if.
