We tend to memorialize things like Guadalcanal and Normandy and ignore Stalingrad,  the Rape of Nanking, Dresden or Hiroshima. We'd have a much saner and more humane foreign policy if we changed the focus of our memorials from macho heroism to common suffering, and our enemy's suffering as well as our own.

But the idea that one gender or the other somehow is better off in a war just leaves me cold. What's the solution - make sure the casualty ratios are gender equal? Shoot X extra men or women everyday to maintain the balance?

I don't have any problem with the income differential stats. I don't claim to know the true assessment of the situation, but I personally know of situations where gender and race lead to lower incomes for the same work (however unionization is one way to cure that - unionized teaching has pretty good pay equity, for example).

But to worry about gender equality in refugee or other war-related stats just boggles. How silly do we want to make this? It's the kind of thing that really hurts the argument.
