Presidential candidate prior to 92. Many people thought that his poorly received convention speech in 88 damaged his potential for 92 or later.

I was overwhelmed by the arc of his life and how all of his endeavors were inevitably building to that stage!
At 17 he makes it to the Rose Garden to shake Kennedy's hand as a delegate to Boy's Nation, an imitation political convention sponsored by the American Legion. He goes to Georgetown Univ. and was soon president of his freshman and sophomore classes.  He clerked for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The Rhodes scholar then goes to law school and comes home to Arkansas to run against a longtime incumbent in Congress.  He loses narrowly but he is on the map and within 2 years is Attorney General!   Poof! He's Governor with a national profile chairing the National Governors Association and leading the DLC.

It's really an incredible story.  Even with a disaster like his DNC speech in '88 he turned that into more exposure by going on the Tonight Show and laughing about it.  It's just has an inexorable, undeniable air of destiny.
