  •  But what is the execution here? (6+ / 0-)

How does he get votes for it?

I don't see how it works.

    •  It's a cramdown, pure and simple (12+ / 0-)

He wants people to lower their expectations for government services -- this is why JFK's "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country" has always seemed sort of off to me -- and may be facing pressure from Europe and elsewhere to get the U.S. to share the pain of austerity so that we can stop being even as much of an unexpected good example to the rest of the world in this respect as we are.

The game, according to the bipartisan elite, is to get people to demand less so that the wealthy can have more (and compete with the wealthy of other countries.  That isn't cheap, you know.)

How will we get the votes?  Most every Republican but the most populist or representing the most seniors, plus enough Democrats who are more worried about elite opinion than they are popular opinion.

In working with Occupy I have had to cut through the cynicism about the Democratic Party (including its designated good guys, such as in the case Pelosi, there to make us feel that not all is lost and that someone still represents us -- even in a losing cause) with the energy required to get through a reedy swamp with a machete.  This is either going to make doing so even more difficult -- or actually impossible.

How will he get it passed?

"It's such a small piece of a much bigger bill, mostly symbolic, not so injurious, look we have this study from a major think-tank half of whose Board is Democratic and liberal, let's just agree to disagree, pass it, and move on."
That's how.  Some will be fooled, maybe enough to keep Dems in power.  But maybe not -- and then those who gave up will be blamed for the loss rather than those who precipitated such abandonment.
