    he owns a house in Old Town Alexandria and a "farm" on the Potomac near Fredericksburg.

    Regardless of the less than wealthy background in which he grew up (he was the first in his family to graduate from college and had to work while in college to pay his bills), he does not seem to understand the lives of ordinary Americans. He has experienced success for most of his life:  he was first in his undergraduate class at George Washington where he was also class president, but when he got to Harvard Law realized he was somewhat overmatched and while getting his degree went in a different direction.  He made a fortune in telecommunications.

    He also has been very involved in the political process from a fairly early age, having served as a staffer on the Hill, run for Senate before he ran for and got elected governor, served as a major figure in the state party -  which given his wealth he could afford to do.

    That said -  he is the 800 pound gorilla of Virginia politics.  He is by far the most popular political figure in the state, which may be why he sometimes does not listen to all the voices he should
