  •  I'm in California and every time a story (10+ / 0-)

like this comes up, I have another talk with my kids about appropriate use of phones and my expectation of them to tell me if something like this is going down.

If more and more kids who took and posted these pictures got into trouble, parents would take it more seriously and scare the shit out of their kids.

should be held responsible... maybe that would have more parents sit down like you with their kids and talk about responsibilities.

for sending pictures like this, they might think twice. Obviously the kids in these circles have no empathy and can't put themselves in the place of the victims, so they need to be afraid of real consequences for themselves.

invites to their property when they are not around, there would be better supervision.

Part of the tragic irony of these assaults is that the photographs and sending the evidence around is the evidence that a crime has occurred, especially if she was drugged.

Without the rapists drive to document their trophy conquests and impress their friends, the story would be reported as just another depressed teen who committed suicide.

    •  It's not just the pix (4+ / 0-)

It's the actions the pix document. This one in Calif. is so reminiscent of Steubenville.(in which Anonymous also finally stirred authorities to action)

"After an extensive investigation that we have conducted on behalf of the family, there is no doubt in our minds that the victim, then only 15 years old, was savagely assaulted by her fellow high school students while she lay on a bed completely unconscious,"

afraid, but that there is significant social support for their bragging. The cases we are seeing now are only the ones where the rapists were so compelled to seek fame; they wanted to BE SEEN by their peers and classmates as having the ability to get away with it.

That they could count on widespread support for their continuing humiliation campaign is just the same punishment in a new century. It's a path to "social power."
