"becoming beloved by whites all over as a result of his willingness to emulate Jesus Christ instead of a normal human being in his response."

Having grown up in NY and being born into a family who loved baseball (all three teams), I was lucky enough to see Jackie Robinson play in person.  The people in the stands loved him because he was a great player and helped the Dodgers become a great team while he was on it.

I don't remember my parents or grandparents ever mentioning the sentiments you expressed.  I just remember them praising his skills as a baseball player and rooting for him as a player.

My family were baseball fanatics, but rooted for the NY Giants at the old Polo Grounds.  My Grandmother was the ardent Dodgers fan.  It was an interesting time in the house.  Everyone was heartbroken when both their teams moved west.  They went on to become Mets fans.  Anything but the Yankees!
And the only thing I ever remember hearing said about Jackie Robinson was that my parents wished he played for the Giants, and my Grandmother just gloated!

I think, therefore I am........................... Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose....AKA Engine Nighthawk - don't even ask!
