    the problem is they are not all that reliable at that age, hence they do not carry that much validity.

    Further, much of what we do in testing presumes everyone developing across multiple domains at the same rate.  Some develop at different rates in different domains.

    Some just are slower or quicker.

    In a sense, all tests with stakes involved are a form of abuse

    what would be better is that there are only two measures

    - meets standards

    - yet to meet standards, in which case we keep at it until one does.

      disagree with Teacher Ken (he's one of my favorite writers on Daily Kos), but I don't know that all high-stakes testing is abuse (which is not to say it's a great idea, just not necessarily abuse).  I think that high-stakes testing of very young children would qualify as abuse, and I agree that because of Bush's stupid school "reforms," school systems now overdo it.
