I can say it was pretty well developed by 1975 because we rented a house out by Great Sippewissett Marsh on Cape Cod that summer while we were doing rough framing on my parents' summer cottage near there.  The house was by a good sized tidal pond and there were about a dozen floating rafts equipped with racks rather similar to the one pictured in the diary.  I swam out now and then to look at the healthy oyster beds growing there.
