  •  One of my students invited me to the art show (12+ / 0-)

that the middle school put on once a year, to showcase student work. I looked around, this kid's pencil drawings were excellent. He'd done a self portrait, a tiger, an owl, an eagle and a Saint Bernard dog. Almost photorealistic. Definitely head and shoulders above anyone else's work on display that day.

I took a look at the program, he wasn't mentioned for any awards. I took a second look at the first, second, third, fourth place and honorable mention winners. Good, but not as good as his. So I asked the art teacher what the deal was.

She agreed that they were good works, but, she explained, he didn't get any awards because he failed the class. Seems he didn't turn his work in on Friday, when it was due, but kept working on it until he was satisfied with it, so all his work was late, and he didn't turn in enough assignments.

    •  This^^right here is exactly what's wrong with (10+ / 0-)

the so-called education system.  That kid really learned a good lesson, didn't he? Getting it right comes second to jumping through the hoops.  We no longer teach kids how to learn, to analyze, to think about how to approach a problem from different perspectives, or even that you can.  The U.S. is turning out far too many functional illiterates who cannot think for themselves.  It's both embarrassing and heartbreaking.

And if you're lucky enough to live in republican land, voters will not pay even a penny to pay for up-to-date text books.  They short-sightedly, selfishly refuse to think long term or what will do the community the most good.  But if you ask for money for a new prison, that they consider a good use of funds.  Maddening.

I sure hope they make as big an example of Rhee's wrong doing as they did over-hyping her the first time around.

Thanks teacherken, for bringing this to a wider audience.  As I scrolled through the comments, I had to smile at how many talented people we have here at the kos.

      •  You're right, and this is why it takes a village (6+ / 0-)

I found the kid at the show, told him I thought his work was the best on display, and asked if I could have the owl to frame and hang in the classroom. He told me all his work had already been spoken for by aunts, uncles and cousins who also admired his work. So he got lessons from more than just one hide bound art teacher.

    •  Hey, just like in the corporate world.... (7+ / 0-)

I mean, who cares if the latest iteration of smart phones or tablets is full of bugs so long as there's product to move before the shareholders start dumping stock, thus devaluing the CEO's stock options?

      /snark, in case anyone's wondering ;-)

Is it courageous to propose tax cuts but not identify a single tax expenditure to rein in? Is it courageous to target your deepest cuts on the poorest Americans, who vote in lower numbers and provide little in campaign contributions?
