  •  Sin taxes are regressive.... (9+ / 0-)

Seriously. It really bothers me to see progressives embracing them. They hit the poor and working-class much more than the wealthy, and smoking rates are declining in large part to simply educating people on its dangers. More focus on harm reduction, where a nicotine addict might consider switching from cigarettes to a considerably less dangerous option such as Swedish style smokeless or nasal snuff is a better idea if you want to lower smoking rates further. Because nicotine is addictive. And for many people, you're not getting them to quit. You're just asking them to shell out an extra $3-$5+ a day as compared to the base price of cigarettes.

Besides, all you need to know is this. When there is a new alcohol or tobacco tax or restriction, the versions of those products favored by the wealthy are barely touched. A $3 bottle of Olde English makes for a much better target than a $40 bottle of fine Napa wine, even though they're the EXACT SAME drug. Just like a pack of Marlboros makes for a much better target than a box of Graycliffs or Padrons.
