She never expressed any remorse for her treatment of Jon Snow in the books.  I wondered why they did that as well.  Possibly for something in the future?  If so that's pointing toward another big change from the books.

out. But changing the nature of a character?

I wonder if their fear of about people not liking the fantasy genre is going to drive them to completely change her story line.

I'm already annoyed with some of the other character changes. (Stannis does not have an affair with the Red woman. Where is his wife and daughter? His character is all about a rock solid set moral code. He would never have an affair. Of course, since his wife seems to be non-existent in the books.... and in the books, it isn't sex with him which produces the "smoke offspring." And this conversation about him not having the strength to produce a baby is absurd. This stuff drives me nuts. It's one thing to need to make changes, it's another to make ones which dumb down the story line or don't work for a character's personality.)

And I laugh at how there are so many overly explicit sex scenes, but they tone down the injuries. Tyrion did lose his nose in the books. So, that line from Cersei in the series "I had heard rumors..." was wry. And Theon loses digits in his torture.  I'm assuming he is not to become what he becomes in the books, since he has to be tortured far worse and longer than he was in the TV series to become that.

weren't there suggestions/inferrences that he and Melisandre were engaging in some fun in the sack?

I don't know about his wife, but his daughter will be making an appearance at some point this season.

          scenes.

and given his nature, it would be abhorrent to him to go extra-marital, I would think.

Because he does things from a character's "point of view", you know what the character knows, or suspects, or just believes.

And people miss these things.  Like what Renly likes (liked?) to do with his free time.  Obvious if you read carefully.  But a lot of people missed the hints.

Stannis was absolutely getting it on with the Red Woman in the books. Not in some soap-opera "affair" way, but in a  dark blood-magic way. She was using his kingly "essence" to create her evil shadow children. Not hard to imagine how she "collected" that essence.

The repeated process sapped Stannis of his strength and basically put him out of commission for long periods, bedridden in his chambers. His fires did indeed "burn low," as she said on TV.

That the rigid, upright Stannis succumbs to her allure is a testament to her power.

        •  But no one in the TV series took an oath of ... (0+ / 0-)

... fidelity to George Martin and the books.

From reading the books, I felt no doubt that Stannis and Melisandre the Red were sacking, so to speak. It was not a feature to be celebrated, but then she was the Red woman and he, well, he used to be an honorable man.

Turned my older brother on to it about 20 years ago, and he's still gobbling up novel after novel.

He told me that the books fell apart at the end in terms of story, and the great series soured because of that.

Perhaps the producers and writers are working it so that doesn't happen with the show.

      Great episode. Great recap.
