  •  I just cant imagine it (8+ / 0-)
All the dances have been "privately held" - in other words, year after year, event after event, parents have hosted these affairs and have TURNED AWAY students at the door -e ven one student who was biracial was turned away from the Whites Only dance.
Turned away how?  "Sorry... you're black.  Your prom is down the street."

    •  Yes. Disgusting. (11+ / 0-)

They had proms sponsored by the district until the law made it so if it was a school function, it HAD to be inclusive. And then instead of desegregating, they went to "privately held" social functions... separate. So decades of children have had this culturally institutionalized bigotry. Until now. Until these girls stood up, as friends, and said , "Enough!"

And, since they've raised enough money all by themselves to hold their Integrated Prom, they are donating the extra money to two needy families in their community.

Here's their Facebook page. These young women should be given citizenship awards for their service to the community.

do you have your family tree - we'd like to make sure you aren't some kind of octaroon!

Actually reminds me of a story I heard on the radio about the red haired., pale skinned Ohioans who identify as black and who are discriminated against as N!gg3rs.  ON one level it was an interesting cultural case study.

I used it because it was all over the radio program.  The use was bizarre and shocking - as of course, these folks were described as very Caucasian and their connections to African Am ancestors may have been a very long time in the past - it was based on their name and where they lived. Maybe 2nd great grandparent or further. I think it illustrates how deep and mindless the pure hatred displayed by some people.

No need to recc.  I understand - I'm not looking for reccs.
