....it coulda been the "bloody gut-shot splatterin gore everywhere" that got away....

According to the teacher, the guy was hospitalized and even tho nothing penetrated his skin, he had to have surgery on his guts later...

I am not at all surprised. But it still beats the alternative, I imagine.

"excessive backface deformation" - which in certain regions of the body can kill you instantly.  Spleen and heart come to mind.  Liver, kidneys, lungs?  Lingering death if not promptly attended-to.  Squishy bowels?  Might have issues, might not.  Many hollow organs are easily damaged when full or near full (bladder) yet are more forgiving when empty.

              This extends beyond firearms:
Seatbelt injuries (prior to lap/shoulder belts) and steering wheel injuries were two common mechanisms of injury.

columns, while we're talking about blunt force trauma on a mass-killing scale.

Three ejected from a street-modified Pontiac Firebird which became nearly airborne, sideswiped the guard rail and went sideways into 6 and 12 inch maple trees.  The six inch snapped @ 10 ft. up from impact.

I checked the attractive blonde female passenger who was unconscious with a 1 inch long slender cut on her forehead.
No wrist pulse, on the right wrist with silver bangle bracelet, extended out the right window.
No carotid.  The door being jammed, I hoisted myself into the back seat, where the majority of the deceased driver - and the young ladies brain and back of skull - was located.

The M.E. opined that the hard plastic steering wheel shattered with the force of a handgun bullet, and a postage stamp sized piece killed her instantly.

She was one of the reluctant passengers of a known thrill seeker, who's girlfriend was one of the survivors.  The girlfriend, having been through this before, put her hands around the driver's eyes from the backseat.
This "always works" to get him to slow down.
He never did, evidently proving what a man he was.

The speedometer was frozen at 85 mph.  The tires nearly bald from laying 1/8th inch of rubber down for over 110 feet.

We discovered a hitchhiker (1 of 2) a mile away at the intersection of the Interstate, who demanded to be let out of the car.
He provided much of the narrative, saying the car sped-off from there, and only upshifted with the tires chirping all the way up the hill.

Just one, of many ways I've seen to die, in or around a car.

Oh, the driver.  1/3 of him remained in the front seat.  2/3s didn't.

Turns out I was the 3rd person to determine no reason for extrication.  One of my fellow firefighters and a police officer were bent-over the guardrail easing the gastro-distress.

"Welcome to the Big Show kid... you gonna heave too?"

No, I'd seen this before, while still in-training.  Our final exam was interrupted by a 26-car accident on the NYS Thruway.
We went.  Did what we were trained to do, and passed the practical exam.
