  •  There is one aspect of the gun debate that has (9+ / 0-)

affected me the most, and I am sure many others. It is something I did not understand, as I support the right to own a weapon for defense in the home. The real, unemotional fact, is the very small odds that the gun will be used in defense, versus the much greater probability that you or someone in your home, will be injured or killed by the weapon. I have heard it is about 20-1. This of course includes suicide, which may or may not be mitigated if the immediate method for self-destruction is taken away. I am sure that many people, in moments of despair or drunkenness, take their lives, when in the morning, the world would not look as bad.

    •  Actually, evidence points to the fact (5+ / 0-)

that without a gun, many suicides will not happen. A gun is perceived as painless and fast, while other methods -- hanging, pills, razor blades, jumping, etc. -- are perceived as painful, slow and/or uncertain.

One thing many depressed, potential suicides say is that what prevented them was the thought that they might screw it up and end up crippled rather than dead. A gun generally is seen as the one "certain" way to die.
