  •  a man spotted with backpacks they say. Backpacks (8+ / 0-)

must be the choice to go to now a days it seems like. I don't like them, and now they will make me even more nervous. We had a bomb scare just 1 block from where I live last Friday as something suspicious was spotted being put into a bag. False alarm thank goodness.

    •  Crikey - more sirens, and we're not in Boston. (12+ / 0-)

Lots of insanity breaking loose in general bits near Quincy right now. Sheesh...

      ...backpacks...?

Boston's a College town. Lots of schools, universities.

      Backpacks are a staple commodity.

And it's Patriot's Day in MA, so far more ppl flooding the area than usual. Many with backpacks for the convenience of carrying stuff & such.

If they're trying to narrow down parameters and added "backpack" ... then they just expanded their data set. :/

    •  Reminds me of the time my mother (4+ / 0-)

caused an entire terminal of Heathrow Airport to be evacuated, due to her well-intentioned decision to report some unattended luggage nearby.  I can still see it:  old-fashioned hard-sided luggage in expensive-looking chesnut leather, three or four matched pieces.

This was during the Irish Republican Army bombings of the late 70s.

I had been visiting my father-in-law just before he died. I rented a car and drove him from Orange County to LA so he could visit a couple of relatives. A couple of days later I was catching the red-eye back to the east coast and as I was clearing out the rental I found a couple of his empty oxygen cylinders under the seat. I didn't dare leave them because I was afraid I'd start a bomb scare. I brought them with me to a customer service gate and explained the situation. They told me I couldn't take them with me and I couldn't leave them at the airport. I ended up calling my wife (who was staying with her dad) at 6:30 am and having her make the hour-15 drive from Laguna to LAX to pick them up for me. (A big thank you to American, who rebooked me on the next flight without charge.)

    •  Oh c'mon. I wear a backpack because it's a very (7+ / 0-)

easy, back-friendly way to get stuff around. Messenger bags could be used just as easily for bombings. The backpacks aren't the problem; it's the human beings that carry them.

    •  Or it might not be (9+ / 0-)

When the DC sniper incidents happened, at some point the police mentioned a report of an unmarked white van at one of the scenes. The panic over white vans after that was out of control. When the culprits were arrested, it turned out they had a blue sedan.

Could be backpacks involved, could not be.

      •  the whole white van thing was idiotic (4+ / 0-)

I live in the DC area.  You could not look on any street at any time and not see white trucks or vans all over the place.

        •  White Vans are often fleet vehicles. (1+ / 0-)

When I worked for NCR, we went from having white Econoline vans, to white Pontiac Aztecs. Ugliest vehicle in America at the time. Had at least one person point that out in a parking lot every week. I was glad I could agree, and blame it on the company.

thanks a lot this will make it not easier. I have spent my life with backpacks. Lets hope people dont make the wrong stereotyping.

remember the famous photo of the Mumbai assailant with a backpack? take away his rifle and he would look like any ordinary person in any crowd. It will always be like that. Don´t blame the crowd for looking like him.

    •  about backpacks (5+ / 0-)

I'm sure there are thousands and thousands of bags and backpacks in the area.

It's the finish line of a marathon!
