This is going to sound crass but I've already lost one leg (surgically as an infant, planned, scheduled and anticipated for months).  Someone wants to blow off the other one, whatever.  And I say this as a former resident and as I console someone who does have a friend who lost a leg... I say that as no small thing, and his life is permanently changed in a way unlike mine was.  No fear here, although I do recognize that every person responds differently and my response is not the only legitimate one

Speaking of people I say things as... speaking personally, as a newly-christened criminal defense attorney?  If the universe were to accidentally allow the perpetrator(s) of this kind of horror to be put into a room of injured victims and families of the dead who happened to have baseball bats and other implements of destruction and things were to happen to said perpetrator(s)?  Well, I couldn't really bring myself to care, even though I absolutely understand and defend vociferously the various Constitutional protections.  Suppose that's why I am so appreciative of the Constitution; thankfully, when it works, it stops us as a society from allowing those sorts of outcomes, even in cases like this.  It's also why I strongly oppose the death penalty - I recognize that as a society that sometimes horrible things like this bring out a certain kind of rage, and laws written during a period of calm with necessary time for thought and contemplation can guide us during times where anger and loss lessens our thought and contemplation

I get people who beat each other up, who steal money, who have substance issues and drive drunk, even who kill each other over money or passion.  There's always an underlying, basic human want or need underlying those acts - food, shelter, procreation and cohabitation, etc.  Of course, we outlaw many of these acts as criminal because we disapprove of them, because we recognize that we have moved beyond those raw instincts, even as we can recognize their base causes ("base" and "basic" in this usage used in its more esoteric meaning, "crude" - "base instincts").

But this kind of shit?  Blowing people up for shits and giggles?  Don't get it.  Will never get it.

Will second what Laurence said about Boston authorities - they are securing the Back Bay for a reason.  For all we know, there is or are more unexploded bomb(s) that may have failed to detonate.  That's not fear, that's simple and logical self-preservation; stay out of the cordoned-off parts of the Back Bay until the bomb squad and various tactical units can clear it, perhaps as early as overnight or tomorrow morning..

"The first drawback of anger is that it destroys your inner peace; the second is that it distorts your view of reality. If you come to understand that anger is really unhelpful, you can begin to distance yourself from anger." - The Dalai Lama
