  •  The Olympic park bombing comes to mind. (5+ / 0-)

The casualty figures were comparable to those being reported now, as was the type of bomb (crude, with cheap shrapnel packed in) and the nature of the targeted event (international, highly visible).

But I believe it argues against the idea that speculation about motive would bring us any closer to understanding. In the end, Rudolph's stated motive was gibberish. He didn't like the Olympics because he thought it promoted global socialism, but the "real" reason he set the bomb was to embarrass the government internationally because he didn't like its stance on abortion. In the end, one has the impression of a mind trying to impose some sort of rationality where none, or very little, may have existed.

      •  The "real reason" I daresay was more complex (3+ / 0-)

I'm amazed at how willing some people are to take the likes of Tim McVeigh and Eric Rudolph at their word regarding their motives. Anyone whose familiarized themselves with the ideology of the violent extremist RW would know better. Such folks consider themselves to be "Political Soldiers" and everything they say or do is guided by the desire to forward their political goals. Primarily inciting violence against the Government.

But if that doesn't move you, consider this. How does Rudolph's bombing of a Lesbian nightclub fit into the idea that he was motivated by anger at the Government's abortion policy?

Nothing human is alien to me.
