  •  When 9/11 happened… (9+ / 0-)

…I was working for a British Telecom firm, Cable & Wireless, in their Tyson Corner office. On 9/11 I was supposed to attend a training class in Reston at 9:30am. I was just about to walk out the door when on the Today Show they were showing video of the first plane's hole in the World Trade Center. I called the admin for my workgroup and was telling her to look at a news site when the second plane hit, live. It was gut wrenching, my high school girlfriend worked in that tower.

Well, I had watched enough, I was going to be late for my class. I started driving and tuned into the Howard Stern show to get their take when they reported that the Pentagon had been hit. I lived in northern Virginia. I had friends, relatives, and neighbors who worked there. I felt extremely sick the rest of the drive.

I walked into my class about 10-15 minutes late and got a snarky comment about tardiness from our Scottish instructor. I then told the class about the attacks, about a third of the class immediate ran out of the room (because I assume they had friends, relatives, and neighbors in either the Pentagon or World Trade Center). Our instructor tried to equate the attack to the IRA's trash can bombs. That just drew a string epithets from me, and it was suggested to him that we just forget about the class. We were let out about an hour later. I have never seen the roads in Northern Virginia so devoid of traffic.
