  •  I would love to see Cheney shackled to a chair (0+ / 0-)

at The Hague.  I don't really wonder why he did it.  It is quite clear.  He and his buddies made hundreds of millions of dollars, and got to exercise enormous power.  That is sufficient motive for men like him.  It's really no mystery at all.

    I like this:

There is a sort of diminishing return in terms of the amount of violence we must do to ourselves in order to reduce the violence that others do to us.
But what are we to do in cases like North Korea if neither violent gunpowder warfare or cold economic warfare are options.  Apartheid was ended in South Africa mostly as a result of cold economic warfare.  What can be done?
    •  I am no more afraid of the North Koreans than (0+ / 0-)

I was of Saddam Hussein. They seem crazy to us, and capable of anything. Well, I don't think they're crazy and I don't think they're "capable" of "anything", which is to say, the people in charge are not suicidal megalomaniacs, and they understand perfectly well the inevitable denouement should they ever actually pull the trigger: their gravy train is off the rails.

When push came to shove, Saddam backed down -- which was when it turned out that we were the crazy ones, capable of anything.

To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
