  •  I would suggest that the most successful ones (0+ / 0-)

are the ones who are able to compartmentalize their experiences, to either put it to one side or to forget it altogether, unless reminded.  Most responders are taught to get past the visceral emotional response to disaster and start dealing with the situation at hand, breaking it down into as many parts as necessary to make it manageable.

the problem is if you take this approach, unless you find some way to vent from time to time, you are a ticking time bomb, open to all sorts of extremely negative life experiences.

The other problem is that too often victims are too young to intellectualize their problems and react as a form of lashing out.  My son's fiance has a son from a previous relationship and they have had a rough time.  Currently he is setting fires and last week jabbed a fishhook into my granddaughter's shoulder.  I feel for him but wonder if he can be salvaged, if seven years of Hell have perhaps moved him beyond help

Cain to slay Abel. I suspect it arises from frustrated adulation, rejected admiration.
Perhaps the boy feels rejected, so he's giving people reasons to reject him.
There's that really stupid line from a song, "You always hurt the one you love," but I thing it expresses a truth. Like the line between the crook and the cop, the line between adulation and antagonism is thin.

Why are so many of the Cons antagonistic towards children? Because the "precious children," are getting care and attention they were denied. The tragic part is that for some of the most self-centered, the deprivation is all in their heads. In reality, they were cared for and pampered, but they just didn't "get it." We say they are "out of touch" and that may be literally correct -- their sense of touch is out of whack. It likely accounts for why some people are into cutting themselves.

We organize governments to deliver services and prevent abuse.
