  •  We can make a world of less suffering, despair, (4+ / 0-)

    and injustice.  That would greatly reduce the number of people who turn to violence out of a craving to strike back or to force change.  That's a long-term process, but every step is a gain.

    We can nurture understanding among the different groups who share this Earth.  We can support study and research in areas like psychology, so we can learn all kinds of things such as how to hellp bullies move past the need to bully, how to enable reconciliation after wars, etc.  There's a lot that can be done.

    I suspect, however, that while we can reduce violence greatly, we can't fully be rid of it.  It's part of what we're capable of as human beings.  When it occurs in such fierce and disturbing ways, we can only comfort ourselves by seeing the courage, compassion, and skill of the responders, from citizens on the street to EMS, the doctors who worked so hard for the wounded -- all the people who remind us of  the good people are capable of.
