    The costs and rewards (mostly rewards) of preying on others rather than being a constructive member of an ecosystem.

      It's also about giving in to predators. The romance of being in thrall to something. And because Vampires are basically, possessed, re-animated corpses, it's about dealing with an enemy that looks like a human, maybe even someone you care about, but that is a dangerous predator that preys on humans.

      Similar things with Zombies--cruder version of a Vampire that's all, but both have their roots in the same folklore.

      Same thing with pod people.

      I think part of it also reflects our changing views post 911. People don't know who their enemies are. Because we are faced with predators from so many different directions. As atana points out below--the "Vampire Squid Business Model," Vulture Capitalism, etc., and so on. And of course, home grown terrorism from a variety of self identified, ideological enemies.
