  •  You can make it to work and plug it in (0+ / 0-)

letting it charge for 8 hours ?
When you get to work the battery will not be drained , it will be at aprox 1/2 , so the recharge at work only has to do half a battery charge .

    •  Work is a campus with buildings surrounded (0+ / 0-)

by acres of parking lots.  There are no accessible plugs in the parking lot.

A Volt user tried parking close to the building (which had the nearest row composed of handicapped-accessible spaces) and they ran about a 50 foot power cord across the sidewalk (tripping hazard) and then up to the building.  I don't think they had to prop open the security door, but they plugged in their 220V plug to the side of the building, IIRC.  They got into trouble by parking in the handicapped space (they weren't handicapped) and creating a tripping hazard.  They haven't tried it again.

It isn't just that we're not supposed to use power plugs - they aren't available that I know of in the parking lot area.  There would need to be changes to the infrastructure to add power outlets to the parking lot and then there would either be free power given to whoever plugged in to the poles or there would have to be some fee charged for access.  My employer wouldn't give away power for free, nor would the company pay for retrofitting the light poles.

      •  I could say its not a range problem (0+ / 0-)

the problem is your place of work , when they change so that they don't cause a problem , the range will be fine .

        •  So my place of work needs to change. (0+ / 0-)

Yeah, that's not going to happen just so they can spend money to then give away electric power. I'm hoping they don't do a layoff and get rid of some of us.  I can see asking them to spend money on employees when the company isn't doing so well is really not going to go over well.  So no, I'm not going to risk being laid off just to spend several thousands of dollars paying for a new car when my current bought-and-paid-for car whose environmental impact (through the mining of metals and the formation of plastics, etc) has mostly been accounted for.

Reduce, reuse, recycle.  I'm going to reduce the need for more cars by not prematurely getting rid of my current car.

          •  I didn't say they need to give away anything . (0+ / 0-)

We are talking about range .

You came into this diary saying the range wasn't good enough , now you are acting like I said you should dump your old car and buy another . Nothing could be farther from the truth .

Do you think I was saying that your old car should be crushed , melted down , etc etc etc ?

The car you said didn't have the needed range ,
does in fact have the needed range .
The problem is that the place you work doesn't have a place for you to plug in . That's not the cars fault .
Another person who commutes the same distance as you do , who works at a place that has a place to plug in , will find that the range of the car is just fine .

            •  Yes, we are talking about range. (0+ / 0-)

My first comment was that the range wouldn't work FOR ME.  It was about my commute, how it wouldn't fit my needs.  Then you started asking about my commute and when I said that plugging in wasn't an option, you started saying my employer needed to change their ways to allow for plugging in.  I was pointing out how that wasn't going to happen and that I'd rather stick with a lower impact choice of my hybrid than going out and buying a new car, which is what your diary seemed to be encouraging.

This car would not be a workable solution or even a good solution for me.  That's where I started from and that's what I've returned to.  I will not be considering something like it unless the plug-in has a better range, where I don't have to choose between it and my job.  I think the Leaf has a longer range, but I'm going to wait until my car can't drive anymore before I consider another one.

              •  And once agian (0+ / 0-)

the range of the car is fine , the problem is your place of work is having a problem . The range is fine and dandy and would cover the needed commute with ease .

you started saying my employer needed to change their ways to allow for plugging in

You change words and meaning . You read things that are not said and respond to the things you hear in your head . Not my problem .
