    And an interesting point.

But I noticed that it wasn't only published in the NBER series, but also at the American Economic Review (considered a major economics journal), here's the citation to be used for their paper:

Carmen M. Reinhart & Kenneth S. Rogoff, 2010. "Growth in a Time of Debt," American Economic Review, American Economic Association, vol. 100(2)
    And regarding AER, from Wikipedia:
In 2004, the American Economic Review began requiring "data and code sufficient to permit replication" of a paper's results, which is then posted on the journal's website. Exceptions are made for proprietary data.
I'm really dumbfounded as to how this paper made it into a journal that supposedly has standards that prevent these kinds of SNAFUs...

of the economic world, and will forever be shamed by this unforgivable act of professional malpractice. You ALWAYS triple-check your data!!!

Gotta now wonder where their funding comes from and if they've been given or offered anything of a non-trivial nature by RW or financial/corporate outfits that could be seen as quid pro quo.

is especially damning, given the severity and nature of this "error". Their careers should be ruined over this, both on its merits and as a warning shot to anyone else who would whore themselves to further a self-interested agenda.

          You hear that, Doug Holtz-Eakin?

It's pretty obvious that they cooked up a spreadsheet, saw the results they liked, and hit the "submit high impact article" button without doublechecking. Then it was published without adequate review.

and know what the specific nature of this "error" war? I have a fair amount of experience with Excel and am curious as to how basic or arcane the "error" was. I've seen spreadsheets from hell in various industries that are a case study in "spaghetti code", but even if so that's no excuse as that's what grad students are for, to check these things for accuracy.
