A lot of times retail managers are just doing what they are told. I worked for a retail movie store several years back, and I ended up becoming a store manager. The main reason I ended up quitting despite how much I loved the job was because the company stopped giving me enough hours to keep the store adequately staffed, and they kept asking me to do things to my employees that I felt were immoral.

Luckily, I didn't need the job so I had the luxury of quitting. For a lot of retail managers, they have no choice whatsoever because they need to survive as well. In the end, it becomes easier for them to live with themselves if they treat their employees terribly because it is far more difficult to ask someone you care about and who trusts you to do something terrible.

Time is of no account with great thoughts, which are as fresh to-day as when they first passed through their authors' minds ages ago. - Samuel Smiles
