    Many places use them and insist on instant availability around the clock, but won't pay for on-call time.

    ISTR Colorado at least (rather surprisingly, IMO) had a law that anyone carrying a pager had to be paid one hour's pay for every 8 hours carrying the pager.

    It would not make a difference here, but it seems that if you're expected to be available, you should get a similar differential.

      and on top I was a contractor. So the wanted a contractor on call for no pay. I told them that I wasn't ding it so they fired me. I was Ok about it had other part times. They also wanted me to wear specific clothing, not just dress pants but them picking colors, and told them that was a uniform and they had to pay for it. They said no and I never dressed as they wanted, anyhow they fired me for denying servitude to them.
