    Not an error and not just coding.  

    I've always thought of an error as a mistake, not a purposeful act.

      but it neatly fits the conservative M.O., which is to make shit up or falsify data as required to fit the narrative that is being advanced. Seems unlikely to be just an "error", in the sense of "honest mistake".
