  •  It reminds me.. (16+ / 0-)

of when a co-worker told us (4 guys who all got along well with each other) in a bar, that he was gay.

We all looked at each other and said, "we already knew that, and it's cool".

Well, it's not the same with a parent/child, I know. But the point is that if you are in tune with someone, it may not be a surprise.

Although I can't understand how. Looking back, I was a very gay child. LOL

I don't mind if you're straight. Just don't flaunt it in public.

    •  I ran into an old, but really good, friend (10+ / 0-)

at a wedding (back in the early 80's) We hadn't seen each for months and chatted briefly, but he seemed a bit nervous. Finally he asked me to come outside with him so we could talk.

He started and stopped numerous sentences and finally said something about how we have a lot in common. I then asked if one of the things we have in common is that we both date men. His shoulders eased, he laughed and said "man, that was SO much easier than I thought it would be!"

I can't imagine how awckward it would feel to have to announce to everyone you know about your orientation... I long for the day when we don't all automatically assume anything. It seems to be getting better -- I'm not sure my daughter ever announced anything to friends, but her friends know she's gay (she's in high school). And yet she says for anyone outside her circle, it's none of their business. So she's not really out yet -- just on the fringe...

First the thing is impossible, then improbable, then unsatisfactorily achieved, then quietly improved, until one day it is actual and uncontroversial. ... It starts off impossible and it ends up done. - Adam Gopnik
