Robert Moses Park, there is an area that has streaks of dark red sand. A friend used to take me 4 wheeling on the beach there, he had a permit to do so.

The red sand is heavier and collects in large swaths, sometimes a few inches to a foot deep.

IF you use google earth, look west of the Flight 800 memorial, at the end of William Floyd parkway on Fire Island, zoom up, and you can see traces of the red streaks.

Follow Fire Island west to Barret Beach Park and east to Moriches Inlet you can see traces of the red sand.

gay scene or the nude beaches.  I can see them beach combing, swimming, floating or crabbing along the shore.  We did that in the 60's at a rented house on the Maryland coast.

I also discovered that the island was NO WHERE close to where I thought it was.......

      Thanks folks!
