  •  "The Blue Book" So Stunning I Read It Twice (6+ / 0-)

Shut the book and re-opened it immediately.  By A. L. Kennedy, a writer IMO, who is another Virginia Woolf.

The story takes place on shipboard, crossing the Atlantic from Southampton to NYC.  An unreliable narrator, Elizabeth; a seasick petulant boyfriend, Derek; an old lover who is damaged and damaging, Arthur; and an older couple, Francis and Bunny, facing the end of life are the focus characters.  The theme is the determination of the lover.

Integrated live action and stream of consciousness as the Blue Book gets written beneath the reader's eyes.  Secrets, shame, and devastation revealed. . .but are they resolved?

It's lyrical, devastating, emotional, controlled, and painful.  Sit up and take notice of Kennedy, a Scotswoman, who is the most powerful new voice on the literary scene that I've read in years.
