    Thanks for merganser pictures.  It is strange to think at diagonally opposite ends of the country we have the same common winter ducks.  They have mostly left here by now.  Exclusively salt water here in my experience.

      being so widespread. I like to think it makes them more resilient as a species, when conditions get tough somewhere. They really do have to be tough, all migrating birds. When I add up all the miles and days and risks along the way, making those long trips seems almost impossible, and yet they do. Awesome feat.
