that actually would record nefarious activity around your house ...

    I'm a big fan of www.ready.gov.

I'm a big fan of Doug Ritter.

I'm old-school enough to be a big fan of the Ranger Rick guides to having a plan, and a backup plan, and a field-expedient backup to that plan for when, once the plans have had contact with reality and failed, you've still got to thrive.

    Do you know about ICE?
This should be an entry in your cell-phone with the one person you'd want notified first -- next of kin, spouse, significant other ...

Medic Alert jewelry is worth its weight in platinum for lifesaving. Can't afford it? Dogtags work, and you can get them cheap online. Name, DOB, blood type, medical conditions -- penicillin allergy, etc.
Keep a copy of your current medications in your wallet if you've got a chronic health condition (or you take a baby aspirin every night for prevention's sake, even).

Got business cards? If not, go to an office supply store and pick up a package of the pre-punched cardstock for 'em and some wide clear tape (packing tape). Either print yourself or type up via word-processor a list of contact info on one side, emergency instructions on the other. Seal it up in the tape (poor man's lamination) and tuck it inside the cell-phone case, or into a wallet on the shoelaces, or something of the sort.

The best thing you can do to be prepared is get some training, though. Sign up for a CERT team if you can. The classes will teach you things you might not realize you don't know. More importantly, it puts you in touch with people from your community who'll be ready if it all hits the fan.

I agree about the cheap webcams. I have several free-standing ones from foscam and others that are tied into my alarm system. All can be monitored remotely from my laptop, iPad, and iPhone. This is a great source of peace of mind during storms when we're away from home, and after some vandalism recently, it's also a way to keep an eye out for damage.

Those who do not understand history are condemned to repeat it... in summer school.
