I asked why it was that Sanford got dumped in the first place when the electorate seemed perfectly happy to hold on to other Republicans who had been involved in sex scandals, such as David Vitter and Scott DesJarlais.  I got a couple good answers to that question.  denig pointed out that in his role as chief executive, he had the responsibility of being in contact with state officials at all times, and he just up and disappeared without telling anyone where he was.  Further, he did it using public money.  MichiganGirl noted that, unlike the wives of Vitter and DesJarlais, Jenny Sanford did not "stand by her man" in humiliation after the scandal, but she left him and filed for divorce.  So there is a difference here.
