  •  Getting out of the area is more important. (12+ / 0-)

Getting into cover if fleeing isn't possible, and in the video there is no more time for anything but getting into the car.

We don't know what the man was doing while the video is black.

And one thing they ought to be remembering is this: adults have had time to learn that hearing loss from sudden loud noises often does come pretty much completely back in the absence of physical damage to the eardrum. A kid as young as that voice sounds is likely still being sheltered from the kinds of disaster movies and books - for me, it was Alas, Babylon - that teach that little fact. If she had no reason to hold out to herself the hope that yes, her hearing could very well come back, just about nothing would be able to calm her down.

And she was pretty calm for what she'd just witnessed, honestly. Announcing she remembers who she is with, cataloging her most distressing injury, and expressing what needs to happen - getting out of there. It's only the emotional shock and the repetition that make it sound overwrought, and since she has no real way to know if he understood her...

Heck, we don't know what his hearing was like then, just that the camera microphone and the circuits required to record sound were still working.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.
