  •  And then cast blame on the schools and teachers. (7+ / 0-)

There is damn little even the best schools and teachers can do in the few hours they have a kid when the bulk of hours is in an environment either sterile by poverty or by too busy to care or actively hostile by religious fervor.

Our national education problem is a pitchfork of problems that we too easily just put on the schools—and here I most definitely do not count the "schools" acting as American madrassas that are aiding and fostering ignorance—that are trying to educate our young. We have the problem of children in poverty, some getting their only really good meals at school, without a home that values reading and may actively neglect them. We have children in wealth with parents too busy gaining more to do much more than see them off to some sort of day care or an immigrant nanny who may or may not care all that much. Then we have the religious fundamentalists, of all faiths and denominations, actively indoctrinating their children with ignorance and superstition and hostility to the real world.

Of the three, I consider the last to be the most willful abuse of children. The first often cannot much help themselves. The second are just neglectful and selfish. The last are actively and sometimes knowingly corrupting the minds of their kids—so that they can come up with shit like the sun is not a star. They deserve zero respect.

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]
