  •  You can't legislate mass murders away (6+ / 0-)

But most gun violence isn't occurring in mass shooting situations like Aurora or Newtown. It is domestic violence, it is suicide, it is street crime. One victim at a time, over and over and over.

No, you can't stop everything, but if you can stop even 1 murder or suicide, it's worth it.

    •  I was for the passage of the bill (0+ / 0-)

Perhaps I should have made that clear.

I think using the families of Newtown was the wrong message, frankly.

They should have had the families of the kids being shot one at a time on the streets of Chicago or Philly.

You're right.  This particular bill would have slowed (perhaps) some of those kind of crimes rather than mass shootings.

had bought them illegally from straw purchasers. And yes there were measures in this bill that would have made straw purchases illegal.
But this bill would have stopped shootings like the one at Virginia Tech (the 6th anniversary was on Monday), where the shooter had been diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorder prior to killing 32 students.
My nephew was in class right next to the building (Norris Hall) where the shootings occurred.
