  •  Very similar to Henderson, NV explosion - video (0+ / 0-)

When these chemical plants catch fire, they have so many materials stored so close together that it's almost inevitable for a massive blast. At least in this case, the plant was wisely built far away from the town - although there was still the problem with toxic clouds. This is posted to give a scale and understanding of what the Texas blast was like, you may not want to watch (although only 2 people were killed).

It's not clear how much was anhydrous Ammonia (which is not explosive but flammable in high concentrations) and how much may have been Ammonium Nitrate. I've read a report of 54,000* lbs of Anhydrous Ammonia. If we assume the worst, that it was all Ammonium Nitrate then we need to convert those numbers.

        The 54,000  lbs = 24.5 metric tons
The Relative Effectiveness Factor to TNT is .42
This means the REF is 10.29 tons of TNT, which is around 1/1,500th of Hiroshima.

Of course, it was probably much less since it was a different form of ammonia (exploding as a BLEVE perhaps) and from the news reports not all of it exploded.

*other sources have said 300 tons of AN, instead.

    •  big difference (0+ / 0-)

At Henderson the factory was making high energy percholate rocket fuel.

The West fertilizer factory was completely different situation.

    •  That's an amazing video, (1+ / 0-)

      especially the shock wave.

As for how many people were killed, any is too many IMO.
